Building resilience in opprtunity youth one skateboard at a time
Skate to Relate is a positive youth development (PYD) program that uses skateboarding, art, and mentorship as positive and protective experiences to help mitigate the effects of adversity in at-promise youth.
Our Mission
Skate to Relate is a 501(c)(3)nonprofit organization with the mission to provide the necessary resources and support for marginalized and at-promise youth to engage in health-promoting activities that help mitigate the negative effects of adversity.
We create safe and inclusive spaces where young people can build confidence, express themselves, develop meaningful relationships, and feel a sense of belonging when they are both on and off their skateboards.
Our Core Values
-
We believe in identifying natural talents and developing skills through a strengths based approach, rather than focusing on fixing weaknesses.
-
We believe in creating an environment that is supportive and predictable, where everyone feels protected physically, emotionally, and psychologically.
-
We strive to intentionally create a space where everyone can feel connected to something larger than themselves. This is something we believe can foster genuine relationships and create shared experiences that are meaningful.
-
We believe in affirming people’s identity exactly as they are and examining our biases intentionally and regularly.
-
We acknowledge the need for multiple avenues of self discovery through physical outlets and creativity by creating opportunities for engagement in meaningful activities.
-
We recognize and cultivate people’s inherent capacity to navigate adversity, adapt, and grow.
Our Vision
Our vision at Skate to Relate is that all children and adolescents, regardless of income, gender identity, religion, or ethnic background, have equal opportunities to access health-promoting activities that are fun, engaging, meaningful, creative, self-expressive, and act as protective factors for overall healthy growth and development.
